About PCI
Established on April 12, 2005, Pine Cone, Inc. (PCI) seeks to promote the early detection of breast cancer and prostate cancer via primary preventive, educational workshops, providing nutritional and psychological support to aid in holistic care. Its design empowers communities with information about breast cancer recent facts and trends, while delivering health care resources to sedulous individuals (i.e. those unable to take time off work for a breast cancer screening, get a babysitter to keep doctor’s appointments, etc).
Mortality rates for both breast and prostate cancer are decreasing. Still, one in seven women in the US will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Approximately, 205,000 new cases will be diagnosed each year and an estimated 40,600 women will die. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), more than 500,000 Americans died of cancer in 2004 – 1,500 people a day. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) determined that while 9.6 million Americans have a current history of cancer, some of these individuals are considered to be cured or cancer free and others continue to live with the disease and may be receiving treatment.
Recent estimates for prostate cancer provided by ACS estimate that there are 192,280 new cases of prostate cancer and 27,360 deaths. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in men. (Lung cancer is the first.) One in six men will get prostate cancer during his lifetime while one in 35 men will succumb to this disease. It is determined that the incidence of prostate cancer is more than 2 million men in the United States who are still alive today.
Pine Cone, Inc.’s effective strategy will aid in reducing the incidence and mortality rate caused by breast and prostate cancer. Decreasing the prevalence of cognitive and dietary factors that increase people's risk factors and ensuring that evidence-based screening tests and treatment services are available and accessible via community oriented mediums is Pine Cone’s method of prevention.
Pine Cone’s most recent efforts include workshops and presentations that provide referrals to medical centers, as needed; establish rapports for follow-up services; and educate clients on health promotion and disease prevention. At present, Pine Cone, Inc. is funded through donations from interested parties.
A pine cone is a micro-habitat functioning primarily to reproduce. It also provides resources and living space for various organisms.
